오늘은 어제 지구를 지나쳐 간 엄청난 크기의 소행성에 대한 소식을 알아보고, 영어 공부도 같이 하면서 함께 알아보아요. ㅎㅎㅎ
On Jan 18th, the asteroid known as 7482 (1994 PC1), which was discovered in 1994, passed by the Earth within only 1.2 million miles from the Earth with speed of 76,193 kilometers per hour. NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) announced that there were three other asteroids that passed by the Earth on that day, but none of them were as big as 7482 and passed by the Earth as close. It is known that a million tons of comets approach the Earth everyday and many of them vanish before reaching the Earth's surface due to friction with the air in the Earth's atmosphere. However, this only pertains to small comets. Asteroids, the extraterrestrial objects with bigger size, are hardly vanished by the Earth atmosphere due to their size and expected to cause immensive impact when crashed to the Earth's surface. Due to the potential devastating impact, NASA recognized there is underlying threat with some asteroids passing by the Earth and initiated DART (Double Asteroid Redirection Test) mission to detect and aim for near-Earth objects (NEO). If this mission finds to be successful, NASA may be able to use this planetary defense technology to protect the Earth from asteroidal collision.
1994년에 발견된 7482 (1994 PC1) 소행성이 시간당 76,193 킬로미터의 속도로 지구로부터 단지 120만 마일을 남겨놓고 1월 18일에 지구를 지나쳐 갔다. 미국 항공 우주국은 그 날 세 개의 또 다른 소행성이 지구를 지나쳐 갔지만 7482 소행성처럼 크거나 지구에 가깝게 지나쳐 가지는 않았다고 발표하였다. 하루에 100만 톤의 유성이 지구를 향해 오지만 많은 유성들이 지구의 대기에 있는 공기의 저항으로 지구 지표면에 닿기 전에 소멸한다고 알려져 있다. 그러나, 이것은 단지 작은 유성들에만 해당한다. 더 큰 사이즈의 외계 물체인 소행성은 그 규모 때문에 지구 대기권에서 소멸되기 어려우며 지구 지표면에 부딪히면 엄청난 타격을 초래할 것으로 예상된다. 잠재적인 파괴적 타격이 있기 때문에 미국 항공 우주국은 지구를 지나치는 소행성들의 위협이 존재한다는 것을 인지하여 지구에 가깝게 있는 물체(NEO)들을 발견하고 타겟하는 '이중 소행성 방향 전환 평가' 미션을 시작하였다. 만약 이 미션이 성공적으로 이루어진다면, 미국 항공 우주국은 이 행성 방위 기술 (지구 방위 기술)을 사용하여 지구를 소행성 충돌로부터 보호할 수 있을 것이다.
